To Prepare for the Future of Work, Improve Women’s Working Conditions

Problem:

I was feeling anxious about how the future of automation and robotics could exacerbate gender inequality.

Action:

  1. I researched current realities on the division of labor between feminine-coded jobs and masculine-coded jobs.

  2. I examined projections of which jobs will be the most changed by emerging technologies.

  3. I probed how governments are overly focused on technological trends, and insufficiently considering demographic trends.

Result:

I concluded that to prepare American workers to adapt to the transformational effects of automation on society, government policymakers must examine the present differences in work for men and women, and consider the recommendations of academics and nonprofit groups.

It is my recommendation that if policymakers act now to implement reforms for women’s work, the U.S. can set its full workforce up for prosperity, resilience, and adaptability when AI and robotic innovations arrive in force.
