Raising Children in the Digital Age

Problem:

As Campus News Editor, I set a goal of including more technology stories in Georgetown Magazine that would provide lifelong learning to Georgetown’s older alumni readership.

Action:

  1. I thought critically about the article prompt, that mobile device use is hurting children’s development, and decided to check the underlying assumptions in that statement.

  2. I interviewed Georgetown researchers from cognitive pyschology and technology fields who had children and/or grandchildren, to gain their perspectives.

  3. I learned that digital learning can be an incredible force for good, especially among low-income families, and that technological literacy is important to ensure that kids do not grow into adults who do not understand how media can manipulate them.

Result:

I produced a rich, well-balanced story that is more relevant now than ever, with caretakers debating how much to rely on digital learning tools when educating young children in quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
